As we enter the final stretch of the year, I am pleased to share some encouraging news from the sawmilling sector.
While the improvements aren’t dramatic, we are seeing signs of a slight uptick. It may be the usual year-end boost, but we’ll know for sure in the coming months. Several sawmillers have reported an increase in sales volumes, though pricing pressure persists. We’re hopeful that these higher volumes will soon translate into better prices.
TALKING TIMBER WEBINARS
Thursday 31st October
The topic is “The Changing Face of the Built Environment” where we explore how timber is revolutionising construction. In this special session, a group of visionary young architects will showcase innovative ways timber can be used in sustainable structures and reshape the built environment.
For the first time, these emerging voices will lead the discussion, sharing cutting-edge designs and forward-thinking perspectives. The webinar will also feature a presentation on a WikiHouse construction project, providing a hands-on look at the practical potential of timber. This episode highlights not only timber’s role in transforming the industry but also the vital contributions of the next generation driving this change.
These webinars have proven to be a powerful tool in promoting the use of timber in the built environment. More and more architects, building professionals, developers and even prospective homeowners are seeking sustainable alternatives to traditional building methods and wood is gaining traction.
GREEN BUILDING CONVENTION
Another exciting initiative will be the Green Building Convention in Cape Town from 5 to 7 November at the Century City Conference Centre. Sawmilling South Africa will have a presence at the event as part of the timber corner.
Watch this space for feedback from the event.
With the combined efforts of the University of Pretoria and Stellenbosch University, the market is finally starting to take notice of the benefits of Mass Timber.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO THE YORK TIMBERS CHAIR IN WOOD STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING
In other exciting news, we are thrilled to announce that the Executive Management Committee of Sawmilling South Africa has recently approved a donation of R1 million over the next three years to support the University of Pretoria’s York Timber Chair. We are confident that this contribution will bolster the excellent work being done by Dr Schalk Grobbelaar and his team in advancing research on the increased use of timber. Keep an eye on this newsletter for regular updates on how these funds are being used to further this important work.
FAREWELL AND THANK YOU DUNCAN
On a bittersweet note, at our recent Exco meeting, our long-serving chairman of the past four years, Duncan Mackay, announced his intention to retire from the sawmilling industry at the end of the year. Duncan has been a steadfast leader and a prime example of the perseverance required to thrive in this industry. His expertise and leadership will be greatly missed, but we all wish him the very best as he embarks on this next chapter of his life.
As always, don’t forget to keep cutting straight and drying flat.
Cheers,
Roy Southey
